Apology to a Whale and Queen of the Amazon
Cecile Pineda - recently honored by the City of Berkeley for her writing - will discuss two of her works, one of fiction and one nonfiction.
The newest work, Apology to a Whale, explores the impact of humanity on our natural world and what inspires us to kill and destroy so much of this beautiful place. It explores new ways of thinking about environmental issues with strategies about reframing our approach to create the shift for which we have all been waiting.
The passionate backdrop of South America has produced some of modern literature’s most remarkable female characters. In her novel The Love Queen of the Amazon, Cecile Pineda enhances this roster with a brilliantly drawn portrait of a Peruvian madam, Ana Magdalena Figueroa. She us one of the few great Latin heroines not created by the male imagination. Her amorous history provides a unique vehicle for Pineda to look with a satirically feminine eye at the manners, mores, and literature of all the Americas to which “Love Queen” is a noteworthy addition.
