Computer Training for People with Disabilities

  1. Alameda County Computer Resource Center (ACCRC).1501 Eastshore Highway (between University Ave & Gilman, east of Highway 80) Phone 528-4052. They teach mostly computer assembly & repair, and some computer use (Linux only, not Microsoft) They also donate computers to eligible individuals. In an industrial warehouse, wheelchair accessible, but not totally accessible.

  2. Eastmont Computing Center.7200 Bancroft Ave, Suite 3209. Phone 382-0555. Jorge Flores, Lab Manager. No eligibility requirements. They do have adaptive technologies. Also is one of the SeniorNet Learning Centers, which offer computer classes specifically designed for adults 50 and older.

  3. East Bay Center for the Blind. 2928 Adeline Street, Berkeley. Phone 843-6935. The Center, owned and operated by the Blind for more than sixty-five years, offers one on one computer classes on adaptive technologies such as JAWS, WindowEyes, and Zoomtext. Classes are free to members or nonmembers. Membership is $10 per year.

  4. California Department of Rehabilitation.Orientation Center for the Blind. 400 Adams St , Albany . Phone 559-1208. To assist newly blinded adults. Must be a client of Department of Rehabilitation, legally blind, and 18 or over.

  5. Center for Accessible Technology.2525 8 th St. (at Dwight Way) Berkeley. Phone 841-3224. Provide resources for determining what technology might be helpful for people with disabilities. Train on specific adaptive technologies, no general computer training.

  6. Computer Technologies Program.2002 Addison St, Suite 201 (at Milvia) Berkeley. Phone 849-2911, extension 303, Mark Hendrix. Computer Technologies Program offers vocational training for people with disabilities as computer support specialists and in office systems.  Each training is six months long and concludes in a one-month, off-site internship.  With Department of Rehabilitation or Veteran's Administration counselor approval, training is free to successful applicants.

  7. Consensus. Berkeley Adult School. 1701 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley, CA 94702 Phone (510) 644-6130. For adults with acquired brain trauma and/or learning disabilities. Professional vocation social adjustment. Advise families how to set up for people who need to learn again.

  8. “The Open House” Senior Center.6500 Stockton Ave (at Lexington) El Cerrito. Phone 215-4342. Offers a wide variety of services for older adults, includingSenior Netclasses and equipment to provide education and access to computers and the Internet. Wheelchair accessible. Also Senior Centers for Oakland and Berkeley- call first for availability of classes.

  9. Deaf Counseling, Advocacy and Referral Agency. 14895 East 14th Street, Suite 200 , San Leandro TTY: (877-322-7288) Voice: (877-322-7299). DCARA Headquarters and San Jose Outreach office provide Computer Training Class and Lab with space for 10 students. The 10-week classes as well as special workshops are offered a few times a year.

  10. Lions Center for the Blind.3834 Opal St. (at 40 th) Oakland. Phone 450-1580. Computer and office skills training for low vision or legally blind adults residing in Alameda or Contra Costa counties. They have a great variety of adaptive technology.

  11. Community Colleges. More than 100 California community colleges offer High Tech Center services for students with disabilities. Services generally include access software for students with physical disabilities, text magnification software for students with low-vision, screen reading software for students who are blind, access tools for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and a variety of reading, writing and basic skills software for students with learning disabilities. College of Alameda also provides instruction and access to cognitive retraining software for students with acquired brain injuries. Laney, Merritt, and College of Alameda have Centers. Anyone over 18 or a high school grad can take AT classes. The classes are ½ unit to 3 units. The student does not have to be in any other classes. $20 per unit. Fee waiver available for low income students. Disabled Students Programs: Berkeley City College 981-2812; Laney College 464-3428; College of Alameda 748-2328; Merritt College 436-2429.

  12. Oakland Public Library. 125 14 th Street. Phone Lynne Cutler, Services for Persons with Disabilities and for Older Adults , 238-4974. Training for one to two hours, scheduled in advance, on adaptive technologies (ZoomText, Kurzweil 1000, Kurzweil 3000, and Inspiration). Referrals are made to other agencies for JAWS training. Every library branch has some adaptive technology. General computer training is offered through the Computer Lab on the second floor of the Main Library, and one work station there has ZoomText, a large keyboard, and a height-adjustable table.
