Patterns in Spelling.
New Readers Press.
This series of four books begins with the word family approach (words with similar sounds) to teach basic vowels and consonants, then moves on to more complex consonant blends, sight words, and diagraphs such as "sh," prefixes and suffixes.

  • Volume 1. 128 pages.
    Student edition - light blue cover. Teacher's Edition - green cover.
    Beginning reader level.
    Absolute basics of short vowel sounds introduced clearly and systematically. Extensive use of patterns with short vowels. Workbook format.

  • Volume II. 128 pages.
    Student and Teacher's Edition both have a teal cover.
    Intermediate reader level.
    Introduction to patterns with long vowels. Lessons include word families, sight words, and listening and writing drills. Workbook format.

  • Volume III
    Student and Teacher's Edition both have a blue cover.
    High intermediate level.
    Introduction to patterns with consonant blends and diagraphs.

  • Volume IV
    Student and Teacher's Edition both have a light purple cover.
    Advanced level.
    Presents word families containing vowel sounds that are more difficult to spell.

Follow up to Patterns in Spelling.
A systematic method of learning to spell English words of more than one syllable. Not purely phonics based. Stresses the regularity of spelling in the English language. Students need to have a good grasp of English phonetic patterns, but still have difficulty spelling multi-syllable words. Exercises focus on suffixes, prefixes, Latin and Greek roots.
