READING AND WRITING

Challenger Adult Reading Series.
Cora Murphy. New Readers Press.
Each has an accompanying puzzle book and writing exercise book.
Very interesting stories and exercises. One needs to know the basics before using Challenger.

Volumes 1-4 emphasize learning to read.
Volumes 5-8 emphasize reading to learn.

  • Volume 1
    Low reading level.
    Twenty lessons, each followed by study words and exercises including fill in the blank and sentence completion. Fiction readings increase in length and difficulty through the book. Emphasizes phonics elements and principles, decoding, reading comprehension and vocabulary building.

  • Volume 2 - 129 pages.
    Low intermediate reading level.
    Twenty lessons, reinforcing phonics, vocabulary and reasoning skills from book 1 and each lesson has a brief non-fiction reading selections. Few new words are introduced to give the student a chance to review.

  • Volume 3 - 128 pages.
    Low intermediate reading level.
    Twenty lessons, each lesson has a one-page fiction story followed by comprehension questions and skill-building exercises working on vocabulary development, use of words in various contexts, improvement of analytical and reasoning skills.

  • Volume 4
    Intermediate reading level.
    Twenty lessons, similar format to book 2. Uses non-fiction reading selections and exercises to reinforce vocabulary and skills developed in previous volumes.

  • Volume 5 - 192 pages.
    Intermediate reading level.
    Each lesson has a l-l/2 page reading followed by questions on the story and related exercises such as prefixes and suffixes, word meanings, letter sounds, formations of plurals, syllables, and code breaking.

  • Volume 6 - 199 pages.
    Advanced reading level.
    Lessons have 1-2 page readings followed by exercises dealing with topics including contractions, possessives, words with multiple meanings, capitalization, compound words, and word endings.

  • Volume 7 - 237 pages.
    Advanced reading level.
    Each lesson consists of a 1-2 page reading followed by exercises such as answering questions about the story, fill in the blank, and breaking a code. Lessons cover topics such as letter sounds, measurements, synonyms, antonyms, and hyphenated words.
  • Volume 8
    Advanced reading level.
    Uses mostly non-fiction reading selections from highly respected authors. Introduces few new words. Reviews and reinforces vocabulary and skills from previous volumes and works on developing reading comprehension.

Voyager Series: Reading and Writing for Today's Adults.
New Readers Press. Volumes 1-3 with student workbook for each. Excellent, engaging tutorials aimed at appropriate levels for beginning to advanced intermediate adult learners. Comprehensive Overview of Series.

  • Foundation Book (F) 96 pages.
    Beginning reader level.
    Book reviews vowel, consonant, and blend sounds in an easy to understand word and picture presentation. Drills include fill in the blank, writing and ordering simple sentences, word families, and crosswords. Answer key at end of book. Workbook F reinforces each of 28 lessons in Foundation book. 48 pages with answer key.

  • Book 1
    Beginning reader level.
    Twelve lessons explore themes of Hopes and Dreams, Everyday Heroes, Thrilling Moments, and Friendship with short reading and writing exercises. Introduces concepts of making inferences, writing poetry and journals, diagramming sentences. 128 pages with answer key at end. Intermediate reading level. Workbook 1has additional practice correlated to each lesson in the book. 48 pages with answer key.

  • Book 2
    Intermediate reading level.
    Twelve lessons based on themes of Family Ties, Life Goes On, New Beginnings, and Celebrate Differences. Provocative, relevant readings
    draw readers into exercises that include fill in the blank, identifying plot and character in a story, rhythm and rhyme, context clues. 128 pages with answer key. Workbook 2 has additional exercises correlated to each lesson in the book. 48 pages with answer key.

  • Book 3
    Advanced intermediate reading level.
    Twelve lessons based on themes of great Expectations, Across Generations, Voices for Justice, and Express Yourself. Lessons include drills with compound sentences, character description, viewpoints, context clues, prefixes and suffixes. 128 pages with answer key. Workbook 3 has additional drills for each lesson. 48 pages with answer key.
