Reading level 2-3 for Book 1 (Challenger 1)
Reading level 3-4 for Book 2
A series that teaches reading comprehension using life skills material from home and work situations. Each chapter contains a series of simple statements or short passages each accompanied by a multiple choice question revolving around a particular topic. Topics include signs, want ads, illustrated instructions, sentences with "if," understanding negatives, labels and diagrams, following directions, reasoning and making decisions from written material, sequence, words in context and work vocabulary among others.
Give Me A Call

Skillbook level 1.
Book teaches telephone manners, how to make emergency or complaint calls, how to use phone books. Requires an advanced reading level and is probably too hard for most Second Start students to use independently. Great as a basis for discussion in class or with tutor.
Write Me a Note
Lefkowitz. Fearon Education. 60 pages.
Book shows how to write different kinds of cards, notes, and letters as well as lists, notices, and announcements. Requires an advanced reading level. Great for use in class discussion or with tutor.
Reading Everyday Stuff
Prizzi and Hoffman.
Reading level 4-6 (Laubach 4, Challenger 4-6)
Contains a variety of activities oriented to students in grades 4-6. Some lessons can be adapted for use with adult new readers, particularly the chapters titled Making a First-Aid Kit, Medicine Labels, Safety, Emergency, Yellow Pages and Nutrition Information. Each lesson contains a lesson plan, student reading material, questions relating to the reading material and suggestions for related activities. Materials can be reproduced.
