COMPREHENSION

Comprehension and Study Skills Handbook.
Literacy Volunteers of America. 56 pages.
Difficult reading exercises for students with drills on summarizing content, using logic, taking tests and writing reports. Material is too advanced for most Second Start students. Dense, dry text is hard to read; stories are irrelevant to most adults’ lives.

Reading Everyday Stuff. Prizzi and Hoffman.
Reading level 4-6 (Laubach 4, Challenger 4-6)
Contains a variety of activities oriented to students in grades 4-6. Some lessons can be adapted for use with adult new readers, particularly the chapters titled Making a First-Aid Kit, Medicine Labels, Safety, Emergency, Yellow Pages and Nutrition Information. Each lesson contains a lesson plan, student reading material, questions relating to the reading material and suggestions for related activities. Materials can be reproduced.

Reading for Better Comprehension. Bruno and McGuire.
Reading level 7-8 (Laubach 4, Challenger 6-8)
Contains lessons and exercises on getting ready to read, reading for details, finding and using the main idea, inference and understanding visual aids. Lessons include a story or narrative, vocabulary development, some questions and writing practice. Provides vocabulary lists and an answer key for exercises.
