CLASS DESCRIPTIONS...

Spelling...

Spelling basics, individual and group work, reading and writing practice.

Book Discussion Group

This class is for all levels of readers. We read and discuss popular books, short stories and articles for the purposes of gaining confidence in reading, and expanding and exchanging knowledge of various subject areas.

Writing...

Accurate use of words in sentences and paragraphs so that learners can clearly and correctly communicate in writing.

Basic Reading...

We usually begin by copying a list of words to practice reading, pronouncing, spelling and understanding. We do individual reading aloud to the group from a story which may be news, informational or fiction. We usually read each passage several times. We then often have discussion, sometimes based on prepared comprehension questions. Often, I will dictate sentences from the story and the learners will write them, by ear, if they can, otherwise, by copying. Ability levels vary widely and the non-reader can participate in the reading by repeating word-by-word after the instructor's example.

Practical Math...

Emphasis is on adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, logic and clear and careful interpretation of instructions. We often look at practical problems such as understanding paychecks and bills. We do work that requires accurate reading from a worksheet and also word problems that are read aloud and which require accurate listening. We often review the signs for the basic operations and discuss the meaning of, for example, "multiply." Learners often bring in problems from their life experience which we work on in class. Ability levels vary widely. Learners who have thoroughly mastered the times table are probably ready for a more advanced class.

Writing with Computers...

In this class, students will write on various assigned topics over a series of classes and learn computer skills at the same time to help with editing, spell checking, etc.

Getting Ready to Read...

In this class, students will learn basic skills such as sounds, letters and vocabulary to help build reading skills.
