What is the first step in the process of finding out if I qualify to become a student in the Second Start program? FAQs
Each person who needs our help must telephone (510) 238-3432 to make an appointment for student orientation.
What are the requirements for enrolling? FAQs
The Second Start program is designed to help you reach your goals if you:
- Are 16 years of age or older and not enrolled in high school
- Read below the eighth-grade level
- Speak English well enough to communicate with a service provider and verbally express your literacy goals
Do I need to speak English? FAQs
Yes, you must speak English well enough to be understood by the service provider and verbally express your literacy goals.
Does everyone receive a one-to-one tutor to help them increase their level of literacy? FAQs
No.
Our intention is to provide tutors to those who can benefit from intense one-to-one instruction. Tutors will be assigned in as timely a manner as possible.
Second Start also offers additional educational services such as reading, beginning and advanced math, spelling and writing classes, as well as a computer learning center that is stocked with a full range of educational software.
Is it a confidential program? FAQs
Yes, Second Start is a confidential program. We do not give out any information about you or your participation in the program to anyone without your permission, not even your family members. And to protect the privacy of all our students, we ask that you not bring your friends or family with you to Second Start unless there is a family event.
How much does it cost? FAQs
All the Second Start programs are free. You are asked to pay for workbooks you use, but this is optional depending on your situation and needs.
Do you tutor children? FAQs
No, students must be 16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in high school to be accepted in our program.
Are families included in the program? FAQs
In order to encourage reading and literacy skills within the family, Second Start offers Families for Literacy programs. Children are given age-appropriate books.
How do I know what classes to take? FAQs
Staff members will suggest appropriate classes based on your assessment.
Is there anyone to help me in the computer lab? FAQs
There is always one or more trained staff members available to help find the right computer program for you and to help you use that program.
What is an assessment? FAQs
An assessment is a series of reading, writing and comprehension exercises that help staff identify your strengths and weaknesses so that they can suggest an appropriate course of study.
What happens in the assessment? FAQs
When you come to Second Start the first time, we will spend about 45 minutes to one hour talking to you and doing the assessment exercises. We will ask you about your schooling background and personal goals. We will ask you to read out loud.
How long does the assessment take? FAQs
The entire assessment process usually takes about 45 minutes to one hour.
Can my husband/ wife/ children come with me? FAQs
No, to protect the privacy of all our students, we ask that you not bring your friends or family with you to Second Start. Second Start does offer Families for Literacy programs once a month to encourage reading within the family. Aside from these programs, we ask that families and friends not come to Second Start with you.
