If an item you are seeking is not owned by the Oakland Public Library, you may be able to order it through our interlibrary loan (ILL) service at any of our libraries. Here are our basic ILL policies and procedures:

  1. Patrons are expected to pay a $1.00 ILL request fee at the time of the request. Separate request cards should be made for each request, for a book, or for a photocopy of a periodical article.
  2. ILL does not accept requests for current year imprints or for titles already held by the Oakland Public Library. This includes reference materials.
  3. ILL accepts a maximum of 2 requests per patron per month.
  4. You will be notified by phone or by postcard when your item is ready for pickup.
  5. ILL materials may only be renewed through the ILL office. We can make only one renewal request to the owning library for a two week period. Non-renewable books are noted in handwriting on the yellow band. Staff or patrons may call us for renewals (510-238-2124).
  6. ILL materials should be returned in a timely manner with their yellow bands and blue barcode cards. Also, each patron receives with each circulating book a lost book slip notifying them that there is a minimum charge of $50 for a lost item. Many libraries charge over $100 for these materials.

If you have additional questions about interlibrary loan services, please call
510-238-2124.
