eBooks and Other Digital Content

The Oakland Public Library offers a variety of E-books and Downloadable Audiobooks. Library cardholders can download digital content any time, to a computer or a mobile device. We also offer one-on-one assistance by appointment, at the following locations:

eBooks 

OverDrive

  • OPL’s largest e-collection, with thousands of titles, for adults, teens, and kids.
  • Find kids' materials here.
  • Get books for most devices, including the Kindle, Nook, iPad, and your Windows or Mac computer.
  • Popular fiction and non-fiction titles in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian.
  • You’ll need to create an account using your library card number and PIN, and install free software (Adobe Digital Editions).
  • A free app is also available in the Apple App Store / Google Play; search for OverDrive.

 Enki

  • Fiction and non-fiction titles for children and adults, including self-published titles from Smashwords. 
  • Not compatible with Kindle, but works with most other popular devices.
  • You’ll need to create an account using your library card number and PIN, and install free software (Adobe Digital Editions).
  • A free app is also available; it’s called Bluefire.

hoopla

  • Access more than 100,000 fiction and non-fiction eBook titles, and 6,500 graphic novels, for all ages.
  • Content is available to stream or download in device memory.
  • Everything is always available, without holds or waiting lists.
  • A free app is also available in the Apple App Store / Google Play; search for hoopla.
  • You are limited to 8 total check-outs a MONTH, even if you return the titles.  This is a total that includes all formats.  

EBSCO 

  • This is a catalog of older titles published before 2006.  
  • Fiction and non-fiction titles for children, teens, and adults.
  • Read online or download to your device.
  • You’ll need to create an account using your library card number and PIN, and install free software for off-line viewing.

Always Available Classics

  • Over 200 works of classic literature in multiple E-book formats.  
  • Always available for download, with no expiration date and no library card required.  
  • Listed by title or by author.

Safari Books Online 

Gale Virtual Reference Library 

  • Research help eBooks on popular topics for homework help.
  • Download to your device and keep the content forever.

Total Boox (trial subscription)

  • More than 50,000 fiction and non-fiction titles for adults and teens.
  • No waiting lists or holds; all titles are available all the time. 
  • Download and keep titles on your device with no expirations. 
  • Most titles work on mobile devices only; download the right app for your device first - Apple devices; Kindles; Android devices

Tumblebooks for Kids

  • Interactive, online picture books and early readers for kids for different reading levels, with games and puzzles.
  • All titles work on an iPad.

AP Stylebook

  • A leading style and usage guide for journalistic and general writing in the U.S.
  • This database is available at the Main and branch libraries, but not outside library facilities.

Zinio 

  • Full color, interactive digital magazines for popular titles like Rolling Stone, Bicycling, and more.
  • Download to a iPad or other device to keep content forever.
  • You’ll need to create a separate account via OPL’s website, and then create another Zinio account to get started.
  • A free app is also available in the Apple App Store / Google Play; search for Zinio.

New York Times Digital Edition

The Oakland Public Library also subscribes to a large number of online databases and online learning resources that are available to you free from home with your library card.  Get them here.
