Oakland, CA – The Piedmont Avenue Halloween Parade on Saturday, October 27, will have a new twist this year. Among people donning their scariest costumes, the Friends of the Piedmont Avenue Branch Library will march up the avenue with wheelbarrows, carrying library books to the new location for the Piedmont Avenue Branch. The parade begins at 11 AM at intersection of Piedmont Ave. and Rio Vista Ave. (two blocks from the Kaiser office), and will end at the new Piedmont Avenue Branch Library, at 80 Echo Ave. (near Glen Ave.).
The Oakland Public Library is moving the Piedmont Avenue Branch to save money and to gain the stability of a long-term lease. The old location changed ownership in 2009, and the library’s rent went up from $1 to $4,250 per month. The old branch is going to close on Saturday, November 10. The new location will open on Tuesday, November 27. For additional background, please refer to the attached Frequently Asked Questions PDF.
The Friends of the Piedmont Avenue Branch Library will have refreshments, a book sale, and music at the new location. The public is invited to the parade and to the library immediately following the parade.
