Oakland, CA - During the month of August, the Joint City of Oakland/Oakland Unified School District Late Night Live! initiative will include the 81st Avenue East Oakland Community Library. On Friday and Saturday nights in August, the library will remain open until 10pm.
The Library is currently committed to participate in the Late Night Live! Initiative through Saturday, August 27. The only exception will be Saturday, August 12, when the 81st Avenue East Oakland Community Library will be closed due to the citywide budget shortage.
Previously, it was announced that the library's extended Friday and Saturday hours would be from 8 to 10pm, but these hours were later changed; now the library will remain open continuously on Friday from 12pm to 10pm and on Saturday from 10am to 10pm.
Late Night Live! was conceived to provide a safe haven for kids and their families on Friday and Saturday nights. The program began in April after Mayor Quan and OUSD Superintendent Tony Smith announced the inivitative. It is coming to the 81st Avenue East Oakland Community Branch, thanks to cooperation from Library Director Carmen Martinez and Library staff. Located at 1021 81st Avenue, at Rudsdale, the branch library will be open from 8 to 10pm (in addition to its regular business hours) every Friday and Saturday night through August 27.
The Late Night Live Talent show, modeled on American Idol and sponsored by Youth Movement Records, will come to the 81st Avenue Branch Library on Friday, July 22. The talent show will rotate throughout the city during the summer. The top winner of the talent show will front the headliner at Oakland's annual Art & Soul Music Festival (August 20 and 21), and the top three winners will perform at the Back to School Rally on August 27.
