Hey kids! Want to improve your reading skills with the help of a gentle dog? The Lakeview Branch of the Oakland Public Library is once again holding the Paws to Read Program on Wednesdays beginning March 3-24th. Kids entering grades one through seven can sign up for a 20-minute time slot to read to Cookie Scraps, Boris, Zedd, or another friendly dog from 3:30-5:00.
Studies have shown that reading with trained therapy dogs can improve a child’s self-esteem and confidence and encourage a child to read more. See the following link for a video report by KTVU.

The dogs and volunteers are provided by TherapyPets, an Oakland nonprofit, all volunteer group that facilitates animal-assisted therapy, bringing animals to nursing homes, hospitals, and other facilities to enrich the lives of children and adults.
