The Oakland Public Library offers many services for children and families. All of the programs and activities listed on this page are free. Parents and teachers, we have extra information about what the library can offer you.
Storytimes
Join us for books, songs, stretches, and perhaps a visit from a favorite puppet. We offer programs for toddlers under three years old and preschool children ages three to five. Storytimes for the entire family include a bilingual Cantonese/English program.
Dial-a-Story
Call and listen to a story, folk tale, fairy tale, or poems. Recordings last three or four minutes and are suitable for all ages. Dial (510) 597-5054. Choose to hear stories in English or Spanish.
Special Events
Puppet shows, storytellers, book club meetings, craft programs, game days, chess workshops, magic shows, and more. See our schedule of upcoming events.
Homework Help
The PASS! after-school program offers free homework assistance to students in grades 2-8. The program is available at seven branch libraries and at the Main Library Children's Room. At some locations, PASS! staff members speak Spanish, Cantonese, or other languages.
Class Visits to the Library
Please contact the children's librarian at your local library to schedule a visit. We can provide special programs and services when teachers make arrangements in advance. Let us know if you would like a storytime, library orientation, book talk, or research assistance on a specific topic.
Services for Children with Disabilities
At the Main library, children with learning disabilities may use the WYNN reading machine, which scans text and reads it aloud. Learn more about the library's services, materials, and equipment for people with disabilities. |
