Our career collection offers information to job seekers trying to:

  Career And Job Search – resources for job seekers
   
Career Transitions helps you create a personal profile and use a Career Toolkit to build and save your resumes, cover letters, and references. You can return to your profile in the library--or remotely--to track and update your progress in job searching, career exploration, and education planning. Information on networking and other job-search tactics, as well as the opportunity to take low-fee distance learning courses, will help users improve their employment prospects. Local information on unemployment benefits, health benefits, and other social services is available, too.
   


 

Gale Power Search contains all of the Gale periodical archives and reference resources including Gale Directory Library – for anyone seeking business information through business directories and association directories; and Gale Virtual Reference Library – for anyone seeking general reference information including business plans, health information, science, history and many other topics.   LearningExpressLibrary: Over 300 online practice tests, including the SAT, GED, ASVAB, Firefighter, Postal Worker, and many others. Also includes U.S. Citizenship Exam Preparation; and English language and math practice exams for Spanish speakers. If using from home, you’ll need to log in with your name, library card number, and PIN. Find invaluable career resources for job search skills, resume-building, and career certification. Requires a free registration so that you can review and track your progress on exams.
   

 

 

The new Job & Career Accelerator section provides information on jobs that suit your interests and experience, lets you check current job listings from over 5 million job postings, creates resumes and cover letters, and assists with interviewing skills. You’ll need to create a username and password to store your personal job search tools in complete confidentiality. Then, click on the Job & Career Accelerator link on the LearningExpressLibrary homepage. Also, an excellent resource for finding local job listings.
   
 

Vocations, Careers and Technical Education Collection: A customized selection of academic journals, general magazines, books and newspapers on employment ranging from 1980 to current, available through the Oakland Public Library’s databases. You will be required to enter your Name, Library Card number and pin.

O*Net Online – sponsored by the US Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration, this site helps employers, workers, educators and students make informed decisions regarding education, training, career choices and work. It has recently added a good search key for green jobs and over 100 occupations in this area.
   



Bureau of Labor Statistics The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides a user friendly way to research job descriptions, working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings, and future job prospects in a wide range of occupations.
   



The Riley Guide site provides self assessments and links to a variety of personality assessment tools. For each is indicated whether the assessment tool is self-directed or requires assistance and whether it is free or charges a fee for use.

  Job Star Originally established for the California job seeker, this site has the largest collection of salary surveys online anywhere. Combined with lists of books to request from your local library and articles from experts like Jack Chapman, this site will lead you in the right directions for your salary search.
   
SalaryExpert.com provides reporting on salaries and cost-of-living from compensation professionals. Tools help people make informed decisions when planning careers and searching for jobs.
   





Salary.com Use this commercial site to see how your income rates against state averages for your occupation. There is also a link to a cost of living wizard enabling the user to compare cost of living indexes and salary differentials in order to make informed relocation decisions. A free profile must be created in order to get industry specific market range salaries.
