Oakland Tales! : Book Launch with Summer Brenner & Temescal's own Community Works with special guest
Author Summer Brenner & Community Works West, the publication's sponsor, will launch Oakland Tales: Lost Secrets of the Town (TIme & Again Press), a novel about two Oakland youngsters from different backgrounds who take a time travel back to their community's past and into the city's future.
The book, written by Brenner, is being adopted into the core curriculum for eighth grade by the Oakland Unified School District is part of a project whose "purpose is to spike an interest in reading and raise readers’ abilities through the creation of an original novel that reflects the lives and cultural diversity of Oakland youth and their families. The book's goals are to engage, inform, and inspire readers of all ages, but especially the large number of students who have not yet discovered the enjoyment and enrichment of reading. Using the themes of local places and people, current struggles and hopes, the present, past, and future are viewed through the eyes of the book’s young protagonists."
Community Works West, based in Oakland's Temescal District, is an organization dedicated to restorative justice, using arts-based programs to work towards breaking the cycle of incarceration and violence.
The author will read from the work in a salon-style setting, with staff of Community Works West introducing their on-going work in the local community.
