Join us for FREE monthly writing workshops for youth (age 13-18) leading up to the annual Oakland Youth Poet Laureate contest. (Apply by April 7th)

On April 13th: Get Published!

You've written it, so what’s the next step? This workshop equips you to take on the publishing world. We’ll delve into publishing industry practices, writing your literary bio (a must, even if you've never published a word), formatting and submitting manuscripts, avoiding scams, and getting your work out into the world and onto readers' shelves and screens.

Facilitator: Soma Mei Sheng Frazier. Nikki Giovanni calls author/educator Soma Mei Sheng Frazier's writing crisp, brilliant and enticing; Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) calls it harsh and beautiful. But you can decide for yourself.

The Laureate Lab pairs award-winning local authors with young poets (age 13-18) for a very special workshop series. Unleash your voice, take risks and develop your best work – just in time for the city’s premier poetry contest this April. Come write the best poems of your life, meet fellow writers and get ready to become Oakland’s next Youth Poet Laureate. Contest entry not required to attend workshops. Just come write!
