Starting Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 1:00 pm The Library has expanded its services with audiobooks and eBooks available to download from the library’s website. Library card holders can check out and download digital media anytime, anywhere by visiting http://oakland.lib.overdrive.com/ Users may browse the library’s website, check out with a valid library card, and download to PC, Mac®, and many mobile devices. Users will need to install free software. For audiobooks, music, and video: OverDrive® Media Console™. To read eBooks, users will need Adobe® Digital Editions. Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod®, Sony® Reader™, and many others. Some audio titles can also be burned to CD to listen on-the-go. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees! Getting Started on the ePort This new service, powered by OverDrive, is free for patrons with their library card. If you’re new to the OverDrive service, please read this page first. If you’re already familiar with OverDrive, get started downloading audiobooks, and eBooks by going directly to Oakland e-Port, Oakland Public Library’s OverDrive site. Oakland Public Library now offers downloadable eBooks and audiobooks from OverDrive. You can access them from any Internet-connected computer using your library card number and PIN. If you are new to OverDrive, please take a minute to view their Quick Start Guide to get the free software that you will need to download to use the OverDrive service. A Quick Look at OverDrive Features · To download eBooks or audiobooks from OverDrive, you will need to download free OverDrive Media Console software. For eBooks, you will also need to download free Adobe Digital Editions software. For more information see the OverDrive Quick Start Guide. · You can read Overdrive eBooks on your computer and on some portable e-reader devices, including the Barnes and Noble Nook and the Sony Reader (but not the Kindle or iPad at this point). · You can listen to OverDrive audiobooks on your computer, on mp3 players such as the iPod and on many smart phones. · OverDrive downloads are allowed from home/remote locations, but not in the library at this point. · You can choose an eBook checkout period of 7, 14 or 21 days and an audiobook checkout period of 7 or 14 days. · You can check out up to 3 items at a time. · You can place holds on titles that are checked out. · There are no renewals. eBooks can be checked in early. Audiobooks cannot be checked in early at this time. What if all copies are being read or are checked out? You can place holds on up to a total of 3 eBooks or audiobooks at a time and you will be notified when each one becomes available for checkout and download.
