While NewspaperArchive.com is a resource with enormous potential, it’s not as easy to use as other databases provided by Oakland Public Library. The search interface is primitive. Search results are sometimes inconsistent and are not returned quickly. On the plus side, the library currently gets access to this database for free!

  • To find a newspaper issue by date, click on the “Browse Available Newspapers” tab and set dropdown menus for title and date.
  • To find a word or topic by date, type the word or words you want to find into the search box at the top of the Access Newspaper Archive home page; click search, then click on Refine Your Browse, and then set the dropdown menus for date and publication. It may be necessary to reenter search terms more than once. No subject heading terms are available; this database is not formally “indexed,” but any word or words found in the text of an article can be searched. For that reason, rare words and unique names are easier to find.
