Building Bridges with Poetry

Obasi Davis, Oakland's incredible new Youth Poet Laureate, attended the Bay Bridge opening with Juan Felipe Herrera.

Last month we announced the new Oakland Youth Poet Laureate, Obasi Davis, at an event that honored him and the other talented young finalists.  We are so proud of them all!

On Labor Day, Obasi had the amazing opportunity to attend the opening of the new East Span of the Bay Bridge alongside California's Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera, who invited him to come as his guest.  We are so grateful for all the support given to the Youth Poet Laureate program by Juan Felipe Herrera.  In addition to serving as a judge both this year and last, he has served as a friend and mentor to these young poets, even featuring last year's Youth Poet Laureate, Stephanie Yun, on his webpage

As Obasi said himself, "Monday was great. I met Juan Felipe Herrera and saw him perform in front of around 1,000 people. I also got to hear speeches from Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Mayor Jean Quan. Overall it was a great experience."

In case you missed it, check out this article in the Oakland Tribune about Obasi and the Oakland Youth Poet Laureate competition.  Keep an eye out!  We're expect big things from Obasi and you don't want to miss them!
