Get a Fresh Start!
Fines and Lost Books Forgiveness,
November 24 – December 14, 2007

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do you mean by “forgiveness”?
A: If you request it, Oakland Public Library will clear your record of all fines and fees for lost or overdue books, magazines, DVDs, videos, CDs and other library items that were checked out before November 1, 2007.

Q: Why is the Library doing this?
A: We want to give library cardholders, especially young people and families, a chance to get a fresh start so they can begin using our many resources again -- even if their cards were previously blocked.

Q: What if I’ve lost my library card?
A: We will issue you a replacement card on the spot at no charge. If you can’t bring in your card, just bring in a piece of government-issued picture ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.). School ID cards are acceptable for teens and children.

Q: When can I get my fines and fees cleared?
A: This is a special one-time offer from Saturday, November 24 through Friday, December 14, 2007.

Q: How do I get my fines and fees cleared?
A: You will need to visit one of the many Oakland Public Library locations in person to get your account cleared. You cannot call or e-mail us to do this. You will be able to check out books and other items the same day!

Q: Are there any items that cannot be cleared?
A: Tools checked out from the Tool Lending Library and items checked out on November 1, 2007 or later cannot be cleared from your account.

Q. Further questions?
A. If you have more questions, please contact your nearest Oakland Public Library or call (510) 238-3134.
