  • The Oakland Public Library's Magazine & Newspaper Room will search for obituaries and death notices of people who died in Oakland and nearby surrounding East Bay communities. The cities included in this search area are: Alameda, Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, San Leandro, and Castro Valley. The Likelihood of finding an obituary or death notice in a daily Oakland newspaper for other cities not mentioned is very low.
  • We ask that you provide an exact date of death, complete and accurate spelling of the deceased name, and last known residence.
  • The fee for this service is $2 per name requested, any unsuccessful searches will still be charged for the service.
  • We will only accept 2 names per request, per month, per person. There will be no exceptions to this rule.
  • Requests may only be submitted through U.S. Mail and we ask that you please include a self addressed stamped envelope for returning your documents. Overseas request must be paid in U.S. dollars and include appropriate return international postage.
  • The Oakland Public Library does not insure the success of any requests.
  • Due to the national and sometimes international popularity of this service the average turn around period per request is 30 days.
