The Oakland History Room, a reference library devoted to the history of California, is an important center for study of the history and current development of the East Bay.

The room owns a variety of material about state and local history, including books, magazines, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, photographs, postcards, sheet music, trade catalogs, and scrapbooks.

If you are interested in:

Genealogy, we have:

Oakland City Directories, 1869-1943.
Alameda County Voting Registers, 1867-1944.
California County Histories.
Oakland Birth and Death Certificates, 1870-1904.

 

If you are interested in:

Pictures, we have:

Photographs of Oakland (neighborhoods, events, buildings, houses, people) from the 1850's to the present.
Postcards of Oakland from the 1910's to present.
Oakland Tribune yearbooks, 1911-1949.
Illustrated books of Oakland from the 1870's to the present.

Jack London books, biographies, letters and photographs.

A subject index to articles in books and magazines about California history.
A newspapers clipping file maintained since the 1920's covering state and local events.
An index of local newspapers beginning in November, 1978, arranged by place name, event, person's name or City Department or Agency.
Early local black newspapers on microfilm.
More than 20,000 books about all aspects of state and local history.

Requesting information by mail from the Oakland History Room:


The reference librarians in the Oakland History Room can assist you by mail with information from our unique local collections, as listed above. You may also request assistance by e-mail by using the library's E-answers service and filling out the online form. We will reply within 2 working days.

Each search is limited to about 1/2 hour of staff time and 10 photocopied pages. Persons whose questions require extensive original research will be referred to information brokers or independent researchers. Copies of Oakland birth and death certificates, 1870-1904 may be requested by mail for a donation of $2.00 each. Please direct requests for obituaries or death notices to the Magazine & Newspaper Room.

Browsing the collection, all are welcome. However, materials from the Oakland History Room must be used in the Room.
