Library Resources

The Magazine and Newspaper Room of the Oakland Public Library's Main Library maintains over 1000 current subscriptions to popular magazines and newspapers, as well as archival files for many titles going back over 100 years.

Materials available include:

Magazines and journals: over 1000 current subscriptions, backfiles of over 4000 current and historical titles, online indexing and full-text available for most current titles.

Newspapers: over 100 current subscriptions; also microfilm archives of the Oakland Tribune since 1874, microfilm archives of other historical Oakland newspapers, the San Francisco Chronicle, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the Christian Science Monitor.
Telephone directories are current for all locations in California and for most locations in other states. A small collection of directories for foreign countries is also available.
Photocopy machines for items in paper or microfilm.

We can also help you with the online magazine and newspaper databases, which are currently available in the library in graphical or text-based format , or by telnet from your home. Click here for more information regarding the databases which are available.
