Special Collections

 

African American Reference Black History Collection

This collection consists of reference works covering major political and social figures, significant historical periods (e.g., slavery and Reconstruction), and artistic movements (e.g., Harlem Renaissance) in the African American experience. The materials include biographical dictionaries, almanacs, primary documents, chronologies, histories, and encyclopedias. This is a non-circulating collection.


Genealogy

Family History & Genealogy Collection 

The Family History & Genealogy Collection is made up of both reference and circulating books to get the amateur family historian started. The reference collection includes many volumes of the Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Books and guides to research in California and many other states as well as introductory works and guides to undertaking ethnic genealogy. The circulating collection focuses on introductory works and basic guides.

Geography

Map Collections

The extensive map collection at Oakland Main Library represents countries from around the world. City, state, country, regional, road, and trail maps make up the bulk of this circulating collection.

Specialized maps such as earthquake, topographic, and local and international historical maps comprise a large segment of our map collection. These maps do not circulate.


Music Scores Music Scores and Sheet Music Collections

The circulating music collection at Oakland Public Library is comprised of various types of printed music:

  • Chamber music performing scores/parts
  • Solo instrumental & vocal repertoire
  • Instructional methods
  • Play-along CDs/cassette tapes with accompanying scores
  • Full and miniature orchestral scores
  • Piano/vocal scores for operas, musicals, sacred and popular music and much more!

Also of significance is the popular songbook collection which is known throughout Northern California for its song index, which provides access to thousands of songs that are not in the online catalog. This collection of songbooks do not circulate.

City of Oakland Tree Oakland History Room

The Oakland History Room is an important center for study of the history and current development of the East Bay. Its collection contains a wide variety of materials relating to the history of Oakland and the larger Bay Area, including books, magazines, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, photographs, postcards, sheet music, trade catalogs, and scrapbooks.
