East Oakland Youth Offered Free Tutoring and Chess Mentoring at Eastmont Town Center

****************************************************

(Oakland, CA )— The Eastmont Branch of Oakland Public Library has launched a new Teen Homework Center offering free tutoring in math, science, English and Spanish for eight hours per week. Middle and high school students can now drop-in for homework help on Saturdays from 1 to 5pm, and on Mondays from 3 to 7pm. Interested youth need no appointment and can simply come in during program hours to the adult reading room of the Eastmont Branch Library, located at the Eastmont Town Center, 7200 Bancroft Ave., Suite 211.

The Teen Homework Center program, which will run until the end of school in June, is actively seeking volunteer academic tutors as well as chess mentors. A new Eastmont Library Youth Chess Club (The Eastside Knights) for elementary through high school students will meet concurrently with the Homework Center, to provide an alternative developmental activity for youth after they finish their school work. Academic tutors and chess mentors are welcome to volunteer for any amount of hours that fit their schedules.

To volunteer or to find out more about either the homework help or the chess club, please contact Don Waters at dwaters@.oaklandlibrary.org or (510) 615-5726. Learn more about Oakland Public Library and its programs at www.oaklandlibrary.org. Please refrain from wearing scented products. The Oakland Public Library is a department of the City of Oakland.
