January 19, 2005 AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH YOUTH ACTIVITIES INCLUDE ART,
STORIES and HARRIET TUBMAN February is packed with Black History Month activities for all ages at the Oakland Public Library. This year, kids can come face to face with a historic great, be captivated by a story, or get creative with a kente crafts workshop. Come in for one of these educational events and leave with a new book from our children's collection. HARRIET TUBMAN, C. J. WALKER, & IDA B. WELLS ARE @ THE LIBRARY Actress/educator J. P. Myrick transforms herself into famous African American women to teach an unforgettable lesson in history. In February, Ms. Myrick will appear at several branches of the Oakland Public Library as Harriet Tubman, America's most famous Underground Railroad conductor. This is an interactive musical performance that demonstrates how hymns were used as codes to help escaping slaves in their search for freedom. Ms. Myrick will also appear as Journalist Ida B. Wells to give a motivational talk on the importance of the Freedom of Speech. Ida B. Wells will appear:

YOUNG ARTISTS WORKSHOPS ON PAINTING, CONFIDENCE @ AAMLO: Artist Milton Bowens whose exhibit, Soul Food: Southern Pattern and Rituals is on display at the African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO) from February 5th through April 2nd, will lead two free workshops for young artists in February. Interested artists and their families must call ahead to register. Both workshops will be at AAMLO, 659 14th Street. How to Paint is a workshopfor ages 12 to 18 years. Weds. Feb. 9, 10:00 am to 12 noon. Please RSVP by Feb. 2 at (510) 637-0200. Message Driven Art is a confidence-building workshop for ages 12 and over, and their families. Sat. Feb. 19, 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Please RSVP by Feb.11 at (510) 637-0200. KENTE CLOTH COLLAGE CRAFTS : Artists from MOCHA, the Museum of Children's Art, will show children how to create their own beautiful kente cloth collage. Supplies are provided. There are two kente craft workshops: AFRICAN STORIES FROM A YORŮBÁ FOLKLIFE MASTER Only One Cowry and Other African Tales will be told by Obáfémi Orígúnwŕ, an educator in Yorůbá folklife. Families are welcome at this dramatic storytelling session, where we'll practice verbal skills and memorization through chanting as well as explore problem solving and negotiation practices. These stories celebrate traditional wisdom and village folk values.
