The Oakland Public Library is currently seeking volunteer after-school tutors for OLAS, Oakland Libraries After School service. Volunteers work to provide homework help and study skills to K–6th grade students in a variety of subjects.
WHEN: January–June 2008, Monday through Thursday 2 or 3 pm–5 pm
WHERE: Children’s Room-Main Library; César E. Chávez, Golden Gate, & Eastmont Branch Libraries
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Volunteer tutors will:
- Assist students in grades K–6 seeking help with homework on a drop- in basis.
- Provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Activities could include reading with a student, practicing spelling, reviewing vocabulary, or practicing multiplication tables.
- Under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator, organize and implement supplementary materials for the use of students.

- Tutors may be assigned duties to support the education and enrichment of the students. This may include assistance with arts and crafts, interactive games, or computer support.
REQUIREMENTS OR QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have high school diploma.
- Prior experience working with children is highly desirable.
- Willing to commit to a minimum of four months, working at least two hours per week.
- Successful tutors are patient, creative, flexible, and like working with children.
- May be subject to background check.
