Golden Gate has approximately 35,000 books, compact discs, videos, DVDs, audio cassettes, and magazines and newspapers for all ages. Circulating materials are largely of popular interest with a strong emphasis on fiction and jazz music ( Golden Gate is well known for its GG Friends' sponsored Summer Jazz on Sunday series). The African American collection is one of the largest branch collections in the system. Special-interest collections include the East Indian Collection, a small Performing Art Collection (including Storytelling, Reader's Theatre, Puppetry, and Drama), and a collection of Chess "how-to"; books for all ages. Branch History
The Golden Gate Branch was one of the first neighborhood libraries to be established by the City of Oakland in 1899. With funding from the Carnegie Foundation, the 7,000 square foot, 2-story building, at 5606 San Pablo Avenue, was originally built and dedicated in 1918. Architects C.W. Dickey and John J. Donovan designed both Golden Gate and Temescal (formerly Alden) Branches. Golden Gate is the only example of Georgian Revival architecture among all of the Carnegies that were constructed in California.
