Disaster, too, has had its tragic place in Oakland history. The Loma Prieta earthquake of October 17, 1989 - interrupting another bid by the A's for a World Series championship - killed 67 people, 41 here in Oakland in the rush-hour collapse of the double-decked Cypress Street Viaduct on the Nimitz Freeway.
